GitHub Copilot: Default Model Enablement for Business and Enterprise Plans
GitHub is rolling out a global default enablement policy for generally available Copilot models on Business and Enterprise plans. This change aims to simplify management by automatically enabling new models, requiring only an opt-out for organizations needing stricter governance. Admins have 28 days to configure this new policy before it takes effect on August 26, after which models not explicitly configured will follow the default setting unless manually overridden.

- New Default Enablement Policy for Copilot Models
A new policy is available that enables generally available Copilot models by default for Business and Enterprise plans. This policy will automatically include new models as they are released, simplifying administration. Organizations can opt out if they require manual model approval.
- Policy Configuration and Rollout Timeline
For the next 28 days, the new policy is configurable but inactive. On August 26, the policy will take effect, changing the status of unconfigured models to 'inherits default' and applying the policy's enablement setting. Explicitly configured models will retain their settings.
- Exclusions from Default Enablement
Open-weight models and those not covered by GitHub's data retention agreement are excluded from this default enablement policy. These models will not be affected by the new default settings, regardless of the organization's policy configuration.
