AWS WAF adds AI traffic monetization to charge bots for content access
AWS WAF now offers an AI traffic monetization capability allowing content owners to charge AI bots for accessing web content at the network edge. This feature enables per-request pricing based on content path, bot category, or verification tier, with payments settled in stablecoins to a specified wallet. The capability addresses the growing cost of serving AI bot traffic which now exceeds 50% of web traffic for many providers, without a corresponding increase in traditional revenue streams. It is available for web ACLs associated with Amazon CloudFront distributions, requiring AWS WAF Bot Control to be enabled.

Features (3) ›
- AI traffic monetization for content owners
AWS WAF introduces AI traffic monetization, enabling content owners to charge AI bots for access to web content at the network edge. This new capability allows granular pricing based on content path, bot category, or verification tier, directly at the edge without modifying origin infrastructure.
- Integration with payment processors
Payment settlement and verification are provided by Coinbase's x402 Facilitator, with upcoming integration for Stripe and Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). AWS WAF handles the payment settlement and verification flow, including verifying payment authorizations and serving content after successful payment.
- Granular bot classification and actions
AWS WAF Bot Control classifies over 650 AI bot types and assigns verification tiers (Verified or Unverified). For each tier, users can configure actions like Monetize, Allow, Block, Count, CAPTCHA, or Challenge, with Monetize action returning an HTTP 402 response detailing pricing.
Enhancements (2) ›
- Direct pricing and stablecoin payments
Content owners can define per-request pricing, collect payments in stablecoins to their preferred wallet, and monitor revenue and bot activity through a unified dashboard. This feature aims to offset the costs incurred by serving AI bot traffic, which is increasingly impacting content providers.
- AI traffic analysis dashboard
A new AI traffic analysis dashboard provides insights into AI bot traffic, including bandwidth consumed, estimated costs, and request rates. It categorizes traffic into all bots, AI bots, verified AI bots, and unverified AI bots, with a per-path heatmap to identify high-activity areas.
Maintenance (1) ›
- Getting started with AI traffic monetization
To begin, ensure AWS WAF Bot Control is enabled. Configuration involves creating a 'protection pack' within the WAF & Shield console, defining content paths, pricing tiers, and accepted payment methods. Test mode is available to validate configurations before live deployment.
