AWS HealthLake adds preview resource matching for duplicate patient records

awspreviewengineerhealthcare
feature announcement

AWS HealthLake has introduced a preview feature for resource matching to automatically identify and link duplicate patient, provider, and organization records. This capability aims to improve data accuracy in healthcare by creating longitudinal patient records and enabling trustworthy population health datasets without requiring specialized MDM tools. The feature supports seven FHIR resource types and is available in a gated preview across multiple AWS regions, requiring users to join an allowlist.

  • Resource matching identifies and links duplicate FHIR records
  • High-confidence identifiers used for matching
  • Automatic linkage and re-evaluation of records
  • No configuration or third-party tools required
  • Preview availability and allowlist access
Features (3)
  • Resource matching identifies and links duplicate FHIR records

AWS HealthLake now offers resource matching to automatically detect and connect duplicate records for Patient, Practitioner, Organization, Location, Device, RelatedPerson, and PractitionerRole. This helps healthcare organizations build more accurate patient records and population health datasets.

  • High-confidence identifiers used for matching

The resource matching leverages identifiers like Social Security, medical record, and national provider numbers, applying their real-world scope and filtering placeholder values to ensure high-confidence matches and avoid false positives.

  • Automatic linkage and re-evaluation of records

Upon enabling, new and updated records are automatically evaluated, with matches connected via FHIR Linkage resources. These linkages are dynamically re-evaluated as source records change and removed if records no longer match.

Notes (2)
  • No configuration or third-party tools required

Resource matching requires no user configuration, matching rules, or external tools, simplifying its adoption. Original records are preserved without modification or deletion, maintaining full provenance.

  • Preview availability and allowlist access

AWS HealthLake resource matching is currently in a gated preview in several global regions, including US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Europe (London), Europe (Ireland), Asia Pacific SouthEast (Sydney), and Canada (Central). Access during the preview period requires joining an allowlist.
