Aurora MySQL-Compatible Edition now supports community MySQL 8.4 LTS, featuring aligned version numbering for easier management. This update includes improved security defaults for new clusters.

- Strengthened Security Defaults
New Aurora MySQL 8.4 clusters enforce TLS 1.2 and 1.3 by default, use caching_sha2_password for new accounts, and offer customizable password validation policies. Automated upgrade prechecks help identify compatibility issues before downtime.
- Faster Release Cadence for Minor Versions
Aurora now targets major versions within 12 months of community LTS releases and minor versions within 3 months of community minors. An Aurora LTS minor will be available within 12 months of each major community release.

- Upgrade and Migration Options
Users can upgrade via Amazon RDS Blue/Green Deployments, in-place upgrades, or snapshot restores. Migration from external MySQL sources is supported using AWS Database Migration Service or Percona XtraBackup.

Amazon Aurora MySQL 8.4 is available in all AWS Regions where Aurora MySQL is currently offered.
